proteus blooms

Here, at the Ranch, our friend Larry has a parcel that has been in his family since the early 70s. His Uncle, after visiting the Blue Mountains in Australia and seeing the beautiful protea plants growing there, decided the climate at this Ranch parcel was similar. Larry’s uncle, after returning from Australia, began an incredible protea garden here at the Ranch.

These stunning plants, so often adorned with generous and impressive flowers, hail from Africa. The beautiful flowers are highly valued for floral work and are grown extensively for the cut-flower market.

Here are a few photos of these magnificent plants.

Here’s a view towards the ocean from the protea garden.

Here’s a shot of part of our “tour” group. This photo also gives you a sense for the size of most of these plants.

  1. Wow! I had no idea what the actual plant looks like. Very beautiful! I want one!! or two ! or three!! Great photos!

    • Aren’t they fabulous!! I think they’ll be the only type of arrangements I order from now on!!

  2. I LOVE protea! How lucky you were to go visit this ranch. They grow well around here, but I didn’t know that they grew on the Central Coast.

    • Oh my gosh..I had no idea how amazing they were!! Do you grow them?

I miss you so much especially this time of year…it was so fun to have holiday boutique days when we could just hang out, catch up (and sip some wine too!!)

Hope all is going well with you..Happy Holidays!!
