Oh how I love Monterey!
Luckily, it’s less than an hours drive from my home. There are actually so many gorgeous places – all different and unique – within an hour or two of my home. I feel so lucky and also always wonder why I don’t visit them more often. I suspect that work (and life in general) often get in the way.
Earlier this summer, my mom was out visiting, and we decided to head down to Monterey to visit Fisherman’s Wharf for the afternoon.
It was one of those fabulous days that start out a little overcast but ends up sunny and gorgeous with the perfect temperature.
As we were walking the wharf, we saw a sign advertising a 45 minute bay cruise, so, on a whim, we decided to go. We went out on a 12-seater tiny boat. It was great for being really close to the water.
If you’d like a longer cruise 2-4 hours and to possibly take in some whale watching, there are larger boats like these you can go out on.
I cannot believe I haven’t done this before, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting – especially with children.
It’s the perfect amount of time to get in a little “on-the-water experience” and to see some of the local marine life up close.
They’ll even let you hold one of these sea snails (if you dare).
To me, it looks like something “made-up” in a science fiction flick, and I was grateful that it wasn’t slimy (I didn’t want to look like a big wimp in front of the other passengers)!
The sea lions looked so comfy and cozy and not intimidated at all no matter how close the boat got to them.
I’m thankful to have had such a peaceful and beautiful day with my mom.
A day in Monterey wouldn’t be the same without a trip to Cannery Row for some shopping and a fun lunch at Bubba Gumps.
They have a new mushroom pattie that is DELISH!
Thanks Mom for coming and giving me an excuse to mix-up my schedule a bit and enjoy some of the beautiful Northern California scenery….Come back soon!
….more coming soon,

how gorgeous! i’ve always wanted to go to monterey but it’s a squee bit too far for a day trip. love those sea lions!
aaah, yes, a bit far for a day…plus you might want to leave time to visit Carmel too…it’s also such a gorgeous little town. Somehow Monterey reminds me a little of the East Coast though…possibly it’s the usually gray skies. It can somewhat have that Nantucket/Cape Cod feel…well, without all the preppies :)
